About Us
Who Are We
We, at the congregation known as “Oak Street Church of Christ” see ourselves simply as “Christians”.
Those who have become God’s children through faith in Christ Jesus.
We are identified by His Title, ‘Christ ’. As Peter revealed, “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.”
We are His “ekklēsia” (called out ones). Translated into English as ‘ church’
Therefore all that we do, we do to be His possession as ‘ the church of Christ ’ and individually members of it.
Ruled by no creed or credentials or centralized organization of men, but by Christ and His word only.
Our congregation is autonomous or “un-denominational”
We have come to Christ from many different religious backgrounds, some are 6-7 generations in this or other churches of Christ, others from various denominations and some with no religious backdrop of any kind.
We find our unity in God through His word as directed by His Holy Spirit that is promised to all who call on the name of Jesus by faith and faithfulness to Him.
This from our heart to yours:
“ Our Mission …
To live every day closer to what Jesus had in mind for His Kingdom by filling our hearts with the purpose of God. To pursue that purpose with zeal in obedience of faith to the Lord by studying His word together, spreading his promise of hope and sharing his love through spiritual kinship and uplifting encouragement to all.”
What to Expect
Our Sunday Worship
Each Lord’s Day Morning, while each time is a little different, there are a few things you can always expect:
We Pray, these prayers are led by men of the congregation during the time of worship.
We always have a capella music. Some songs praise our heavenly father, while others teach and encourage us. The words and music for the songs are provided in books located in front of your seat.
We have the Lord’s Supper every Sunday as the first century Christians did. We do this as a memorial to our savior, Jesus. (Matt. 26:26-28; Acts 20:7)
We teach and preach from the Bible during the worship, this 20-30 minutes is to build up the body of Christ, to proclaim his good news, to challenge all to draw near to God in Christ who will not abandon us.
As part of our weekly services we take up an offering. If you are a guest, This is an act of worship for those in Christ , allowing them to give to help continue the work of the church. If you are visiting do not feel any obligation to give. All are encouraged to participate in giving thanks for God’s goodness.
As part of the body of Christ, we see who we are and what we do as a direct reflection of what we find in the ancient text in the New Testament which is informed by the text in the Old Testament. Both being important in our understanding of God’s purpose for us.
